Parampara

– “succession”, lit., “one after another” or “one another” or “that which connects disjointed parts”

Parampara can be understood as denoting either “an uninterrupted line” a “continuous series” or a “regular succession”. The general idea is that of system of transmission which is then qualified by additional terms such as gurusisyaparampara – the “transmission of knowledge from teacher to disciple”. Parampara (like Sampradaya) is widely used to signify the “traditional” or “hereditary”. Generally, parampara denotes transmission through a teaching lineage – be it spiritual/religious teaching, music, dance, or other “traditional” arts.
